As a professional amateur building contractor I have tried several flooring tools, and can easily state that this is the best fastening system I have experienced for both unfinished and prefinished flooring. The staples hold better than cleat nails, and result in far less tongue splits as well. Surface marring and excessive tongue splitting are caused by improper or inexperienced operation of the tool, not by the tool itself.
You can actually come straight down on the actuator when near a wall providing you have pre-seated the flooring. I used wedges during the last few rows. Of course it's impossible to get right up to a wall when finishing. I drove approximately 3000 staples since this was 2 1/4 inch flooring.
The Stanley Bostitch MIIIFS 1-1/2-Inch to 2-Inch Pneumatic Floor Stapler appear to hold as securely as the power cleat nails, and are cheaper. I recommend this tool to the professional installer, and the serious do-it-yourselfer. This is a pneumatic tool and requires lubrication. I provided a drop of oil each day of use.
